Colour code Brown, Black, Red = 1,0 and two zeros = 1000 Ohms = 1K
Gold band indicates 5% tolerance.

This particular type of 0.25W carbon film resistor was chosen because it has the traditional clear colour codes on a light coloured background making them easier to read.

Fixed resistors like this are sometimes shown in schematic diagrams as a zig-zag shape originally representing a resistor wound with wire.  In Europe, that schematic symbol disappeared at about the same time as the Morris 1000 Van and is not recommended.
